  1. A rock containing the blue mineral lazurite
  2. in a matrix of white calcite with small
  3. amounts of other minerals. It occurs in
  4. silica-poor igneous rocks and metamorphic
  5. limestones found in Afghanistan, Siberia,
  6. Iran, and Chile. It was formerly used in the
  7. manufacture of ultramarine pigment. Lapis
  8. lazuli was a valuable pigment of the Middle
  9. Ages, also used as a gemstone and in inlaying
  10. and ornamental work.
